Melissa Farr BA (Psych) Hons
I am a registered psychologist with extensive experience in Applied Behaviour Analysis and psychological treatment for individuals with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. I am thrilled to make support for individuals and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders more readily available.
I provide an evidence-based approach to intervention targeting communication, cognitive differences, relationship development, sensory processing and behavioural challenges. Each individual is provided with a service to meet his/her specific needs. In most cases this would include a combination of direct therapy and strategies for the family or carers to use outside of the clinic environment.
Individuals with ASD often face incredible anxiety which may present through challenging behaviour. Communication and skills deficits can lead to extreme reactions to stress. Such issues can be dismissed as behavioural without exploring the underlying reasons for the behaviour. We need to look at why the behaviour is occurring, what we can do to reduce that behaviour, and which skills we can develop to prevent the behaviour from reoccurring.
For most individuals with ASD, behaviour change will not be possible without the support of the family and carers. My aim is to empower families to support their children's needs. I want to increase the number of GOOD DAYS that you and your child experience.
I work with children, adolescents and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders. I also offer support and counselling for family members and can provide consultation to other agencies such as preschools, schools and places of employment.
In addition to ASD, individuals with an intellectual or developmental disability will also benefit from my approach. I would love to speak with you to discuss your individual needs.
